ABOUT THE ISLAND OF VIS

The island of Vis will definitely seduce you with its untouched nature and peaceful atmosphere. Not without reason, the World Wildlife Found has designated the island of Vis as one of ten best-preserved islands and the last patches of paradise in the Mediterranean region. The area of the island covers 90,3 square km with its interior rich in vegetation, vineyards and olive trees. The coastline is indented with wonderful coves and beaches and crystal clear sea. Due to its geographical position the island has always played a strategic, historical, economical and cultural role. The remains of a Greek necropolis and Roman thermae, Renaissance palaces and villas, fortresses and towers are the witnesses of Vis’ long and turbulent history.

The highest point is the 585m mountain of Hum, where you can visit the Tito's cave, a reminder of more recent history, and from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of Komiža bay, wonderful countryside as well as surrounding islands.

Vis archipelago is a well-known nautical destination too and some of its most famous islets are Biševo with its world famous Blue Cave and the Monk Bear Cave and islets of Brusnik, Sv. Andrija , Jabuka, Budihovac and Ravnik with its Green Cave. The local tourist agencies organize daily excursions to these attractive destinations. The island of Vis is particularly appealing to hikers, trekkers and cyclists because of the well-marked paths and trails all around the island.
